Permanence Objects

A while back, I went to a concert given by a friend of mine. It was her capstone presentation, a sort of thesis-equivalent for music majors. That sort of presentation is something I have some experience with, and so I’m pretty comfortable saying that Sabine knocked it out of the park with hers.

One aspect that I liked, especially compared to my blogging-it-after-the-fact style, was that she built the whole thing around a multimedia web experience. Every piece had, at very least, a page on the site with lyrics; one had a multi-page version that felt like a high-budget lyric video.

I’m going to continue to encourage her to put her music on the various paid streaming services so she can get at least a little bit of money from people listening to it, but in the meantime, please do check out her site, it is… an experience.

  1. Warning: the chorus is likely to get caught in your head.
  2. This is a rare one in that it made it onto my monthly playlist and one of my specific-mood playlists at the same time.
  3. This song was nice and hard to find. The iTunes search algorithm hasn’t improved at all, and also kept crashing when I was trying to look things up. Helpful.
  4. This is probably my #1 recommendation from this list. Listen to the whole album, actually, it’s quite good. (And the intro song feels intensely like the beginning of a ride at Disneyworld.)
  5. I am extremely excited for this album.
  6. New Haux and new Woodkid? It’s a good month for music.

Data Visualization

A quick post of a class assignment we did a while back – tinkering with data visualization. I went with my travels and my playlists as the data sources.

(Obviously it’s low-resolution data, for the most part, but you try showing more granular data on a map of the world.)
This was compiled through a lot of tinkering in Numbers. I’d try to write a script to do it, but given that I am, presumably, the only person on the planet who could actually make use of it, I’m going to not.

  1. Which, thinking about it, would require only a very small modification to my playlist script…
  2. Scene: someone asking me what my taste in music is. “Sad hipsters crooning into microphones,” I reply.
  3. By the end of the year I’m expecting at least one song named 2020 that’s just four straight minutes of swearing. There’s no backing harmonies, but the rhythm section will be awesome
  4. Excellent for signing along to – the main riff is very catchy.
  5. I believe I’ve finally listened to this entire album, so it’s time to start hoping he’s got a new one coming out sometime soon.
  6. It took me rather embarrassingly long to realize “wow, this song sounds like a James Bond intro song” and “hey it’s got the same name as the new James Bond movie” were both really obvious clues that this is the new James Bond intro song.
  7. I only have two songs named ‘Sober’ in this list, but it feels like more, for some reason.
  8. This song has hilariously chaotic energy; the music video is weird, as well.
  9. “Sit down/if you need someone to lean on” is such a powerful line, I love it.
  10. This whole album is very good, and very ‘80s.
  11. I’m still not quite sure what the lyrics here are, but I’ve been hearing them as “sycophant blessings.”

TEDxMcMinnville

I recently had the opportunity to attend a TEDx event. I’m not a big TED Talk person, but I’ve watched or listened to a few, so it was interesting to see a few in-person.

I also used the opportunity to practice my sketchnoting – the ones I’ve done in the past were at my leisure, so I figured it’d be a bit different at a live event.

Which it was – it’s harder to go back and edit when you’re trying to keep up in real time, and it’s a different approach to thinking about what you’re putting down.

I’m not sharing all of my notes here – for a couple of the talks, the notes I got weren’t really interesting in any way, or were too messy to be worth sharing.

Still, I enjoyed the experience, and I’m glad I went.

(As of this writing, the videos from the event are still being edited, so I don’t have direct links; check the TEDxMcMinnville site for updates.)

School: purpose in learning, emporment to learn - becomes - scale from Apathy to Stress. Grades do not equal progress! Grades = pressure, pressure = focus, focus does not equal critical thinking. Good grades lead to secondary education acceptance, scholarship, jobs, which makes them stressful. “Just stop using grades altogether.” An assignment isn’t just a collection of points. Grades decided by conversation. From a gatekeeper to a coach, mentor. Experimentation, going out on a limb, and yes, failing spectacularly. But celebrates the failures and the learning. Equitable! Not just the “smart kids”, the ones who know how to game the system. “It makes me responsible for my grade.” “It’s not me versus the system.” “The world . . . cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” - Albert Einstein
“Start A Learning Revolution. Throw Out the Gradebook” – Matt Brisbin
Mentoring isn’t broken, it’s backwards. “Your voice is the most powerful tool you have, so use it when someone isn’t meeting your needs.” “How can I support your professional development?” From “MENTOR + mentee” to “mentor + MENTEE” The mentee owns their growth. The Egg Sandwich Principles: 1. Flip the narrative! 2. Find your unlikeliest - the person most un-like you. Learn new skills and perspectives! 3. Own your growth - figure out what type of support you need. A mentor’s job is not to reshape you or remake you, but to help your growth.
Mentoring: The Most Underutilized Secret to Success – Cinthia Manuel

I’ll add here that I misspelled Cinthia’s name in the written version, for which I apologize.

Predicting Heart Attacks 1/2 of the people who die of a heart attack have normal cholesterol levels. Age + gender + cholesterol + smoking = heart attack risk? No. Heart attacks are mostly caused by lifestyle. So DNA tests? Not helpful. But markers of inflammation are helpful. except: too variable day-to-day. Big idea: Use a more stable marker! From CRP to GPF. Exercise 30 minutes a day, and your GPF levels fall. Prevent premature death.
New Risk Factor for Heart Attacks and Strokes – David Farrell, Ph.D
Children oscillate between grief and joy. But adults try to be neat and tidy. Ambiguous Loss: Not death, but still a loss. Dementia, divorce, deportation, etc… No end, no conclusion, no resolve. So why grieve? Because we need to process. Suppressing your grief makes it bigger and less manageable. Don’t pull the emergency handle on tough emotion. Have a pity party! Acknowledge your difficult, complex emotions. Acknowledge the circumstances you’re living with. We don’t need to squash or ignore painful emotions. 1. Name your losses as they happen. Stop minimizing them! No “somebody has it worse than me.” 2. Ask for help! Decide how long you need to vent. Ask someone to… just listen. no fixing, no silver lining. Just listen. 3. Ask for more time. Embrace the ambiguity.
Embracing Ambiguity – Natalie Bowker
Service: * Tranquility * Zest for life * Longevity * Wellness * Happiness * Purpose * Health * Friendship Appeal not to altruism, but to self-interest.
Should Self-Interest Motivate Service? – Patrick Galvin
10 childhood traumas are linked to every major chronic illness. How to survive? “Resilience. Sheer perseverance.” Children who believe they can grow do better in life. Restorative approach: * Face the situation directly * Come up with a collaborative approach * Fix the damage to the relationship If a child doesn’t know how to behave, don’t punish. Teach. “People do well if they can.” Behavior is like any other life skill. We should teach it. Detention/suspension teaches kids they don’t belong. Resolving Conflicts: 1. What happened from your perspective? 2. Who was affected by it? Both parties have a share, and co-create in the solution.
Restorative Practices In Schools Have The Power To Transform Communities – Liz Knapp
“We are probably (statistically) extinct.” What is extinction? “What happens when a species dies.” - but - Can cloning bring a species back? A species fits a very specific space in an ecological puzzle. Take one out, and the puzzle rearranges to fill the space. Bringing in a clone? It has to make a new space for itself - making it a new species. The mind is an ecosystem of information. Information you forget isn’t gone, just… misplaced. But your brain can make a new space for it. Extinction isn’t a kind of death, but a kind of memory loss. Extinction is what happens when an ecosystem forgets a species. -but- no memory is a faithful reconstruction.
Extinction: Death And Memory – Leonard Finkelman, PhD
Is your work enabling the life you want, or interfering with it? Work is broken. Burnout, stress, wage stagnation… “The Life I Want” project - documenting an alternative way, making work work for you. Even if you love your work, other forces can break it. We need: employers empowering people; communities working together; governments… governing. 1. Employers: ask your employees what they need & want. Employees: ask for what you need! 2. We need community - not just at work, but outside of work, too. 3. Governments: proactively think through what we need to thrive. Healthcare, labor laws, infrastructure, “right to disconnect.” What is the community that you want? The world that you want?
The Life I Want – Christine Bader

  1. So a fun side-effect of my playlists-in-git setup is that I can see when artists take advantage of the “it’s a streaming platform” aspect and change the names of things. Usually it’s little spelling tweaks, like this – from “F**k” to “Fuck”.
  2. I keep getting just the “holy, holy” chorus line in this stuck in my head, and consistently try to figure out what choir piece it’s from before I realize.
  3. A lot of my music discovery is piecemeal, so I didn’t know The Weeknd actually had a new album out until, like… three days ago.
  4. It’s about here in the list where I realize that I can’t remember where the January/February line hit. How can February have been such a long month? It’s the shortest month.
  5. I can’t tell if this is a cover or a very effective earworm, and I don’t want to google it to find out because it’s more fun this way.
  6. This is an old album by Aquilo, but I found it while stumbling around in Apple Music, and I’ve been really digging it!
  7. Credit to Braden for getting me to listen to this, it’s great.
  8. This and Slowly are my two favorite additions this month.
  9. God, I love Haux, and this captured the exact same feeling they did when I first listened. Impressive, considering that I’m a continent and a few years away from that.
  10. This is back because I got a different song from this album stuck in my head, but… I like this one better.

  1. From what I’ve heard about the awards, I think Billie Eilish is the President of Music now? No pressure.
  2. Haux always has this wonderful ethereal quality
  3. This one makes me wonder how Apple Music gets their lyric data – it has lyrics, but not the live-scrolling kind, so what’s the difference in data source?
  4. Shoutout to my sister, who made me listen to this: you were right, I did like it!
  5. All of Leonard Cohen’s music is just him growling into a microphone and I kinda love it. (That said, lyrically, I’m… not a fan of this one.)
  6. I wonder how many songs named ‘Sober’ I’ve got in my library? It feels like it’s a weirdly high number.
  7. This one always just makes me think of Daja from Tamara Pierce’s Circle of Magic series.
  8. Found this one while putting together a data visualization of my music library over the past few years. I should post that! Or maybe I already have? Hmm.
  9. I quite like Barrio, but Rapide knocks it out of the park.
  10. Something about Kodaline is just… great to harmonize to.
  11. This one also made it onto my “I just want the quiet songs” playlist, which usually takes longer. It’s nice.

  1. This is now in the “heard it on the radio at the gym and was surprised” category.
  2. Elliot Moss might be my favorite artist I’ve found this year.
  3. I was very into Coldplay at the same time that I first joined choir, so this hit hard.
  4. This one’s fun for half-listening to the lyrics and trying to come up with a story behind them.
  5. Courtesy of Do By Friday, and I highly recommend listening to this on some good speakers with the volume up, it’s a downright tactile experience.
  6. Kesha is great and I’m excited for this full album.
  7. “One page of the Bible isn’t worth a life”
  8. This has some, like… videogame vibes in the opening.
  9. Very catchy, and fun to sing along to. I keep getting it stuck in my head in the wrong key, though.
  10. New SYML is always a good thing.
  11. This hasn’t been on the list for long, but I’m really digging it so far. Combined well in my head with finishing up the first season of For All Mankind

  1. Still not available on any streaming service, as far as I’m aware, so no link for you.
  2. I can’t figure out who they remind me of, but it’s someone I like, so whatever.
  3. This throwback brought to you by an earlier song on this list being called “Hold Me Down”
  4. This link is different than the rest, because the search engine backing the iTunes Search API is still broken as hell
  5. Vancouver Sleep Clinic has been showing up in my “if you like this artist, you might also like…” things for… oh, probably a year now. Finally decided to listen; they were right.
  6. Lots of throwback vibes in this one – Sleeping At Last, EDEN, some OneRepublic…
  7. How is Billie Eilish knocking it out of the park with everything she does?
That said, like a lot of her music, if you listen to this you’ll wind up going “is… is she okay?”
  8. This man is really doing a good job of capturing the Gen Z spirit.
  9. Found this one after Chase introduced me to MusicHarbor; it’s pretty neat!
  10. This album is excellent, although I think it helped my opinion of it that I accidentally spread out my listening across several months.
  11. I think this is my favorite addition this month.
  12. Well-titled, it really is a melancholy song.

Tamora Pierce is (Finally) Getting A TV Show

Peter White, Deadline:

Lionsgate and Little Women and King Lear producer Playground Entertainment have teamed on a major fantasy project – a television adaptation of Tamora Pierce’s expansive Tortall Universe series.

I absolutely adore Tamora Pierce, and I cannot overstate how excited I am about this.1

[The companies have] hopes of turning it into a tentpole series that crosses over between fans of Game of Thrones and YA novels.

Obviously, everyone hopes their show will be the next Game of Thrones, but I do think Tortall offers a large enough universe to pull it off. And, again, I would love to see Pierce’s work getting the big-budget approach.

  1. Did I sit down to write a blog post about it for the explicit purpose of making sure there’s some buzz about it online? Yes. Yes I did. I’m trying to encourage them to make it and make it well.

  1. Technically, I have an improved version of it; now I’m tinkering with giving it the ability to do the links for me, too.
  2. Been having fun with this one in the scripting – string manipulation in AppleScript isn’t my favorite, and I wound up switching to Swift.
  3. I wish I could say this was in here because Halloween, but no, I kinda forgot that Halloween was a thing until the day of.
  4. Singles like this are the downside to including the album title in here as well, but I kinda like having more data points to narrow down which specific version of a song I’m talking about.
  5. This goes in with Billie Eilish on the “if you get a HomePod, play this on it” list.
  6. So, this is on here twice, and missing a link in both cases, because there’s a Story about this. Loeks pulled the song from… everywhere, really, shortly after I published my playlist last month. I spent some time trying to figure out if it was a bug, found out it was gone from all the services, found his website, and sent him an email asking about it. He’s reworking it, and going to rerelease a new version at some point in the future, but was kind enough to send me a copy of the original version. That’s the second one here; I left the first, even though it’s not playable, as… part of the historical record, I suppose.
Anyways, it’s a good song, I’m looking forward to hearing (and sharing) the new version, and in the meantime, go check out the guy’s other music.
  7. Fun to sing along to! I have yet to get the lyrics right, but maybe eventually!
  8. This one… is sort of a Halloween one, actually.
  9. Listening to EDEN reminded me of how much I miss Majik.
  10. This month’s winner for ‘favorite new addition,’ I think.
  11. Surprisingly hard to track down – if you try to Shazam the bit of this that made it into the meme (and yes, I’ll admit it, that’s how I first heard it) you get a rap song that sampled it in the intro before making a joke about the meme. Shazam, you have failed me.

  1. For the list, though, I’m just using the output of my iTunes automation
  2. Just now realizing that I have no evidence for strongly assuming Mr. Hudson lives in New York City other than the name, and like… that’s not necessarily how names work.
  3. the musical equivalent to the Dr. Seuss book
  4. Sometimes I’m a little mad that Bon Ever exists, because the whole “disappear into the woods for a while, then reappear with an album of wonderful, weirdly-titled music” niche is one that definitely used to be one of my life goals.
  5. I don’t want to admit to how long it took me to figure out what “Llt” stands for.
  6. I’m slowly building an entire playlist around this song; it’s a good one. Very calming.
  7. I originally found this one via the music video, which I also recommend, it’s kinda fun.
  8. I have a strong desire to recommend this to all my music major friends.
  9. Fun fact, if you use the full title and artist’s name in the iTunes search system, it just… stops working. It’s a great platform with no problems whatsoever.
  10. My brain keeps replacing this with “Thorin Oakenshield” and I would like to clarify that I’ve never read nor seen Lord of the Rings

  1. This song was, in part, the inspiration for my playlist backup automation – I wanted to have a ‘nostalgia’ playlist, sorta built around Cologne, but my “gotta have history” thing wouldn’t really allow it. So: git.
  2. Similarly to Cologne, I’ve now got a playlist built around Before You Knew It Was Me. It’s good for late at night, when you want to be tired but not fall asleep.
  3. I like this song, but the album art doesn’t really work for me; it looks like a screengrab from a lyrics video on YouTube.
  4. Still very fun to sing along to.
  5. So far, my favorite off the new album, but I haven’t finished listening to the whole thing yet, so we’ll see.
  6. This album art gives me some serious JVN vibes.
  7. It’s like the Dr. Seuss book, if Dr. Seuss had been on antidepressants.
  8. Forewarning: this will probably get stuck in your head at least once.
  9. The opening bit here, “wait, sorry, what if it went-“ is amazingly catchy.
  10. I recommend listening to the lyrics, they’re fun.
  11. So far this is the song off this album that gets stuck in my head most.
  12. This link is to the YouTube video, which I rather liked; here’s the iTunes link
  13. Ed Tullet/Novo Amor vibes, obviously I’m a fan.
  14. In the ‘Haux’ vibe, though a little more electronic.
  15. Thought about this song halfway through a swim and had to hop out, dry off my hands, and add it to this playlist before I forgot again.

  1. One of my favorite things about iTunes is that it can show me play counts for songs; I think it’s neat to see what my Clear Favorites are. ↩︎
  2. Two songs by Mr. Hudson on this list now, and I only started listening to him because I hit the wrong thing while trying to play Coldplay one day. Gotta love random chance. (Or a good marketing strategy, I suppose.) ↩︎
  3. Found this song by way of Elementary, who usually have pretty good final songs. And speaking of Elementary, it’s ending this season, I believe. I’ll be needing a new Sherlock Holmes show soon… ↩︎
  4. A bit more from my nostalgia break last month. ↩︎
  5. I really enjoy this one; Mattis has a good voice for it. ↩︎
  6. Gotta love Kesha. ↩︎
  7. One of my top two favorite additions this month; not the album art I chose, though, because Elliot Moss had an excellent design. ↩︎
  8. I… do not want to admit to how long it took me to figure out that this was Chris Martin singing. Just a lot of “wow, I didn’t know Avicii sounded so much like the Coldplay guy!” ↩︎
  9. My other favorite addition this month; some serious Bon Iver circa 2016 vibes. ↩︎
  10. If you like Haux, you’ll like this one. ↩︎
  11. Very catchy, also an excellent pick. ↩︎
  12. I’ve been getting more and more excited for this album over the past month, I’m quite looking forward to it. ↩︎
  13. Again, an excellent addition in the Haux vein. ↩︎
  14. Eventually I’m gonna have an entire playlist of songs that I picked because they reminded me of the excellent sound design in the opening to Passengers. ↩︎
  15. Hey, Bon Iver is back! Bon Iver is great. ↩︎
  16. Lyrically, at least, this is sorta… Evanescence-y? ↩︎
  17. Similar song on this list: “How You’ll Be Remembered.” Sadness and piano, definitely my aesthetic. ↩︎
  18. Reminds me of when I used to listen to Noon Pacific. I wonder if they’ve stopped doing the whole “Spotify-only” thing?
Follow-up, having taken a break to go check: no, they’ve gone deeper into it and won’t even show song names now. Exclusivity: it’ll reduce your audience!
