  1. Because sometimes you need a throwback, y’know?
  2. There’s a couple other ‘stripped’ versions of stuff by them on this list, but this is the best one.
  3. This piece is just so delightfully weird, and so quintessentially 1980s, I love it.
  4. Go listen to the Song Exploder episode about this one.
  5. I found this album by way of the background music to an Instagram video, and I’m remembering that I tend to prefer covers of popular songs over the originals.

  1. “Why are you still posting playlists on your blog when you can just share them through Apple Music?” well you see, this song isn’t available anywhere, and if a song isn’t on Apple Music, then Apple Music’s playlist sharing pretends that it doesn’t exist and there was never anything there to start with
  2. Yeah, I am the reason that’s stuck in your head again. Sorry.
  3. Sometimes you just need some 80s, y’know?
  4. My current description of Blueneck is “the sound of Seasonal Affective Disorder”
  5. It’s practically obligatory; that said, don’t try to grab this whole album, because it’s like nine hours long and randomly interspersed with a reading of some Christmas story or another, which is really surprising when you just hit shuffle and expected Christmas music for an hour or so.

  3. It’s properly winter now, which means it’s time for the Music of Desolation

  1. I described this to someone as “centrist propaganda” the other day, and I stand by that remark.
  2. A text message I sent a couple weeks ago:
“Man I’m listening to “Work Song” and it’s creepier than I thought, like, ‘when my time comes around/ lay me in gently in the cold dark earth/ no grave can hold my body down/ I’ll crawl home to her’
“like she’s just at home mourning the death of her beloved husband and his corpse crawls through the front door? that’s some Edgar Allen Poe shit right there”
  3. I wish I could copy/paste the iTunes ‘explicit’ symbol in here, because honestly this song is just four minutes of Lana Del Rey cussing someone out
  4. I wonder if Avicii heard this song and called Mike Posner like “oh my god dude I’m sorry I didn’t mean to pressure you, are you okay?”
  5. This song has a nice melody for singing along to, but then you realize you’re walking down the street going “take off, take off, take off all your clothes” over and over
  6. I think this song signifies fall in the same way that Blueneck signifies winter.
  7. You don’t really notice until you try to sing along, but dang does this guy have a high voice
  8. Probably my most-played song this month
  9. This song is great for when you need a nap but only have time to put your head down for a couple minutes, it’s really relaxing. Also, I’m exhausted.

  1. One of my favorite things about this one is watching people try to pronounce the guy’s last name.
  2. This is a great one if you’re missing that “classic Ke$ha” feel. And yes, spelling it “Ke$ha” instead of “Kesha” was deliberate.
  3. At this point I’m just keeping this in here because it’s fun to have one song that really doesn’t fit the vibe of the rest.
  4. Probably my favorite off this album, although “The System Only dreams in Total Darkness” is also very good.
  5. “What, do you have a Song Exploder playlist?” – Chase
  6. So, I use Workflow to automate the process of making these posts, because otherwise it’d take me a couple hours each time. The long and short of it is that it uses the iTunes Store’s search stuff, by dumping the full title of the song in, and then lets me choose the right one from a list.
Somehow, given the full title of this song, iTunes’ search was unable to find anything, and I am utterly baffled by how that happened.

  3. Another very calming song, I recommend it.
  4. Kesha is the only person that ever makes me think “yas queen”
  5. My sister played this while she was visiting and it got stuck in my head immediately. Which is okay overall, because I think it’s a pretty hilarious song.
  6. Another one I can blame/thank my sister for.

  1. This song is even sadder now than it used to be.
  2. Fyfe’s new album inspired me to bring back the first Fyfe I listened to. Good stuff.
  3. Found courtesy of Welcome to Night Vale, a fun little podcast for when you’ve got… y’know, four days to kill, if you want to go through the whole backlog.
  4. There were a few of their songs that seemed appropriate for the occasion, but this was the one that I finally went with.

  1. I sent this as a song recommendation to someone on Instagram the other day and they wound up doing a quick guitar version on their Story, so that was cool.
  2. Again, probably my favorite song of the year.
  3. My mom and I sing this one together in the car and it’s a great Family Experience
  4. Probably my favorite song off the new album, and it’s one of those songs that makes me want to know what happened in the songwriter’s life that inspired the song.
  5. Apparently this is a cover of a song? I didn’t actually know and my mind was slightly blown
  6. Hey, remember Yoke Lore? They were in some of my earlier playlists
  7. The chorus on this is so catchy, you’ve been warned
  8. It’s back! This song is on my list of songs that makes me think of home – probably because it first showed up in my playlists right as we were moving to the new house.
  9. There’s some good robo-voice in this, I appreciate it
  10. I’m going to call this my favorite new addition that I got as a single song and not part of an album, it just sounds good, and the computer nerd in me enjoys the lyrics.
  11. Best song off the new album, so far; I wound up throwing it in here for the “gloria in excelsis” bit, because I’m a big ol’ music nerd.
  12. I’m ashamed to admit that this is actually a youtube rip in my iTunes library, I couldn’t find somewhere to legitimately buy this song.
  13. The new album made me want to bring back the first Fyfe song I’d heard. It’s still great.
  14. I’m gonna be honest I was kinda disappointed that this wasn’t a cover of the “Closing Time” that you’re thinking of.
  15. This kinda reminds of Binaerpilot? Weird mental connection to make, I guess, but still.
  16. Another really catchy chorus song.

Playlist of the Month: May 2017

This one’s a bit shorter than usual, to be honest, because I didn’t have time to do anything with it while I was busy dying of finals. I’ve got a backlog of music to listen to, though, so I’m expecting next month’s to be a good deal longer.

Ultralife (Acoustic) – Oh Wonder
Kill V. Maim – Grimes

  1. Having this one and the acoustic version on this playlist is fun, because it demonstrates really well that Apple’s shuffling algorithm isn’t the best at seeming random to humans. I’ve heard those two songs playing in a row something like 40 times over the course of the month?
  2. This and Kill V. Maim are throwbacks to last summer; it happens sometimes.

  1. This works surprisingly well as a vocal warm-up.
  2. But seriously, this is probably going to wind up as my Favorite Song of The Year, I just love the lyrics so much.
  3. “This isn’t a healthy relationship you’re in,” I mutter to myself every time I listen to this song.
  4. “This song is two guys singing to each other; the chorus is them, like, trying to break up, and the verses are basically just them sexting. And it’s backed by a youth choir. It’s so twisted and I love it and I want to be Woodkid when I grow up” – me, describing this song to a friend
  5. Warning: will get stuck in your head.
  6. I’m going to bet this song won’t survive into next month’s playlist, and there’s a single reason for that: I recognize one of the synthesizers the artist used, and it kicks me out of being able to listen to the song every time I hear it.
  7. I’m gonna be honest, at least half of the reason this song is in here is because I’m a twelve-year-old and laughed at the title.
  8. I blame Chase playing this song for the reason that I have this entire album.
  9. New Oh Wonder! I am excited.
  10. It’s just a classic, okay?

  1. This song popped up about two days after Chase pointed out that there wasn’t any Coldplay in my playlist at the moment. Chase, point out the lack of new Explosions in the Sky next, okay?
  2. We’re talking about romanticism in my music history class at the moment, and I keep wanting to bring this song up, because “And I know you’ll fall in love again/ When you do, I hope you’ll find somebody/ Who you can love like I love you” is just ugh so beautifully romantic

  1. The short version is I’m switching to iTunes links, since Amazon Music was fairly hit-or-miss, and I never actually use it myself beyond finding the links for these things. And I’m putting links on everything now, because it’s significantly easier with iTunes than with Amazon.
  2. At some point I’m going to figure out the actual lyrics to this, because there’s one line that every time I hear it makes me doubt my understanding of the whole song.
  3. This one is so fun to sing along to
  4. Chase goes “y’know, they wrote this song about George Bush. Sucks that it’s relevant again.”
  5. This album is so good, 10/10 would recommend
  6. I really like this one but it’s hard to listen to while I’m out listening around because the slightest background noise and it’s just utterly inaudible.
  7. I honestly haven’t listened to the whole thing yet, but so far this is one of the strongest contenders for being my favorite song off the album.
  8. I’m a big fan of this one, as well.

  3. Ditto for the link on this one.
  4. And again, insert your own link here.
  5. This isn’t at all a new song but it’s one I felt like listening to, and so it’s back.

  1. Chase keeps complaining about my choices of remixes and I keep ignoring him, and that’s how that goes
  2. It’s like “I kinda want to punch this guy in the face for being like this” condensed into song form
  3. I have multiple songs named “Ghosts” that I really like. Does this say something about my taste in music?
  4. Probably one of my favorite ones on here, go listen.
  5. I get the feeling I’m going to be hearing this one around the music department a lot when school starts back up.

  1. I find this name oddly hilarious. If it wasn’t in all caps it wouldn’t be nearly as funny, either.
  2. People give me concerned looks when I walk around the school singing “it might be over soon” quietly to myself
  3. seriously the names on this album are so pretentious
  4. Knowing how to type umlauts before I started learning German was quite helpful.
  5. This is a great christmas song for singing along to.
  6. I consider Blueneck to be vaguely christmas music, which is… weird, to say the least.
  7. No seriously just get this whole album okay
  8. I just really like the way that lowercase-i-with-umlaut looks
  9. The link caption for this one is “Amazon: Menswear” which makes me feel like I’m just linking to the online version of a department in a Macy’s.
